Tangy Sweet

Freelance editor Alexandra Onderwater visits Tangysweet, a frozen yoghurt store in the lively Dupont Circle area in Washington DC.

It’s almost eight, and I have a date. Text message reads: Meet me at the funky yoghurt lounge. Mysterious? Not if you’re familiar with this part of Washington, DC. I, however, need more information. I text back: Vanilla, chocolate or strawberry? By now I’m in the lively Dupont Circle area, which is chock-full of bars and restaurants. I’m almost ready to give up when I hear a welcome beep: Look for tangy tables. Fine, but what on earth do tangy tables look like? At that very instant I see ‘tangysweet’ above the door of a shop that’s hard to miss. From inside, the glow of colour-changing LEDs beckons passers-by. I cross a brick-paved patio and enter a minimalist space lined with a series of geometric counters, where smiling customers enjoy frozen desserts drenched in fruity toppings. My date – one of the architects at Kube, the outfit responsible for the design of Tangysweet – is waiting in the adjacent lounge, a more intimate setting than the central ‘runway’ area where people line up to buy their frozen yoghurt delights. Getting to the lounge means passing through a rainbow that gradually changes from raspberry red to kiwi green with a hint of mint, a flavour my partner later selects as a topping for his green-tea yoghurt. Having nearly stumbled through the awesome flood of changing colours, I remain seated while he fetches me a large cup of pomegranate yogurt with health-bar crunch and sprinkles. Yummy!
